75 Years Ago This Week - April 26, 1938

75 Years Ago This Week - April 26, 1938

75 Years Ago This Week began March 1, 1938 - my mother and father were preparing to get married later in the month.

Over in The KINNICK Project blog, we had another week of daily entries from Mom's - that is Eileen Kinnick's - diary.

Some highlights:

We started this week 'planting spuds' …

Eileen mentioned listing to evening radio shows…

Both the Des Moines Register and Coon Rapids Enterprise mentioned on April 22

New week of early mornings… working in the field… continued posting Apr 22 Enterprise pages

From the local newspaper in Coon Rapids, Iowa, the Coon Rapids Enterprise, 75 Years Ago:

April 22, 1938 - front page below - all eight pages shared on other site, fascinating:

My comment: An interesting a different week… settling into some long term routines.

Wordless (nearly) Wednesday - Me, my Dad, and the Dog

Wordless (nearly) Wednesday - Me, my Dad, and the Dog

Likely Spring of 1940

I've wanted to find this photo, for some time, as I've been posted my Mom's 1938 diary from when they got married. This photo was the only one that I thought might show the the house they moved into and the car they had then. Now that I found, it, of course, I realize this might be the second house rather than the first. I am still uncertain when the switched. I should look ahead in the diaries, I suppose, but haven't done that yet...  ;-)

Anyway, love this photo... always happy to share it!  ;-)

Appearance - Bentonville, Arkansas

Appearance - Bentonville, Arkansas

I had a great time presenting my "13 Ways to Tell Your Ancestor Stories and more" talk to the members of the Northwest Arkansas Genealogical Society in Bentonville, AR, Monday evening, April 1. Above, I am with Diane Gininni, President, who invited me. About 25 members participated in our open discussion about 'telling your ancestor stories.' What fun!

Inside the Bentonville Public Library is a really neat department called the William Enfield History and Genealogy Department with extensive resources and helpful volunteers. Among other projects I had a chance to view was an amazing book. It is a compilation of all Confederate Soldiers in the four county area. They are now working on research of each spouse and family of each soldier. An incredibly valuable work project.  While I was there, one lady was transcribing obituaries - they are still the single most requested genealogical item. Of course they are!  ;-)

The Bentonville Public Library, itself, is a fine facility at 405 S. Main near the downtown area.

75 Years Ago This Week - April 19

75 Years Ago This Week - April 19

75 Years Ago This Week began March 1, 1938 - my mother and father were preparing to get married later in the month.

Over in The KINNICK Project blog, we had another week of daily entries from Mom's - that is Eileen Kinnick's - diary.

Some highlights:

Pete doing spring farming. Eileen to Bank Nite movie with Mae West…

Pete disked over at the 80…

Got both an ice box and a stove…

A 'normal' Sunday, worked around the house and yard, Pete had evening meeting…

Monday night, and they went dancing! ;-)

From the local newspaper in Coon Rapids, Iowa, the Coon Rapids Enterprise, 75 Years Ago:

April 15, 1938:

Coon Rapids ranked first in the vocal division in class B schools by receiving four superiors and one excellent in the southwest district music contest at Atlantic Friday and Saturday. Superior rating was given to the boys’ glee, the male quartet, small mixed vocal group, and the baritone solo by Keith Textor. Wayne Cooley’s tenor solo received a final rating of excellent. Events rated superior will go to the finals at Iowa City the first week in May. Fifty schools were present at the contest. Jordan Johnson directed the students in competition.
Miss Mildred Middleton was their accompanist.

My comment: Some of Eileen's close friends in music and in Coon Rapids.

Wordless (nearly) Wednesday - Jason and Arrion with Great-Grandma Hazel

Wordless (nearly) Wednesday
Jason and Arrion with Great-Grandma Hazel

A favorite family photo from about 1970, with my daughter, Arrion, her cousin, Jason Bolger, with their great-grandmother, Hazel Bolger, at our house, in Urbandale. The bonus in the photo is Floyd Offil, sitting in the background taking it all in. He was Hazel's cousin, but we always knew him as just Floyd. What fun - what great memories of days gone by. ;-)

75 Years Ago This Week - April 12

75 Years Ago This Week
April 12

75 Years Ago This Week began March 1, 1938 - my mother and father were preparing to get married later in the month.

Over in The KINNICK Project blog, we had another week of daily entries from Mom's - that is Eileen Kinnick's - diary.

Some highlights:

The week started with working in the field on the other eighty

A chocolate cake and a new mail-box came next…

Followed by a COLD April snow storm

Did you see the map of how close they were to town?

And, company on Sunday, of course…

From the local newspaper in Coon Rapids, Iowa, the Coon Rapids Enterprise, 75 Years Ago:

April 8, 1938:

The new town council met Monday noon and were sworn in. J.E. Howe was appointed town clerk. Adjourning to evening they met at city hall. Taking up organization Ed Zavitz was appointed night watchman; Fred Smith street commissioner and day marshall, Dr. C.E. Wolfe was appointed health physician.
Appointed to the Claims and Finance committee were Cadden, Davis and Textor; Ordinance committee, Kretzinger, Tigges and Textor; Water and Sewer Davis, Cadden and Tigges; Light and Park Textor, Davis and Kretzinger.
The Iowa Savings and First State Banks were named as town depositories. Meeting as a board of health and later as a board of review they met in adjourned session Tuesday night and then they adjourned as a town council to meet again next Monday night.

My comment: Interesting insights into the Coon Rapids city government in 1938.

Around the world this week, 75 Years Ago:

  • Baseball Hall of Fame opened in Cooperstown, NY
  • Henry Picard won the 5th Golf Masters Championship
  • Austria became a State of Germany

Thanks to all who supported the 13 Ways Book Blog Tour!

Thanks to all who supported the 13 Ways Book Blog Tour!

Much exposure gained for awareness of the importance of "Telling your Ancestor Stories!" That was the first priority.

So far, have sold a book in the UK and one in Australia, in addition to those in the USA. Neat to see the world-wide impact of the 13 Ways Book Blog Tour.

Thanks, again, for all the support!

75 Years Ago This Week - April 5

75 Years Ago This Week
 April 5

75 Years Ago This Week began March 1, 1938 - my mother and father were preparing to get married later in the month.

Over in The KINNICK Project blog, we had another week of daily entries from Mom's - that is Eileen Kinnick's - diary.

Some highlights:

9 eggs… and reading love letters

Butchering meat for their new locker box

Took Cream to town… we see it in the ledger book… Neat!

She "told Lite Plant how much I wanted."

From the local newspaper in Coon Rapids, Iowa, the Coon Rapids Enterprise, 75 Years Ago:

April 1, 1938:

The Progressive ticket headed by Paul alex for mayor, won a decisive victory in Monday’s
election electing their candidate for mayor, assessor and three councilmen. The “city dads” for the next two years will be Paul O. Alex, mayor; P.H. Kinnick, treasurer; Ralph C. Bowman, assessor; Councilmen George Textor, Harry Cadden, Dave Davis, John Tigges, and W.A. Kretzinger. Of the old council, the mayor and three council members were not candidates for re-election. Mayor Whitnell had served five consecutive terms, 10 years; John Miller had been a council member 12 years; Meade Steele had served for four years; Russell Dixon was completing the term of Leo Watrous who resigned during his fifth term to take a position with
the municipal light plant. The new council will take office Monday evening.

My comment:
Had to show the Coon Rapids town council election results, since we showed the two tickets earlier.
